Dumars signs Gordon, loses all credibility

1 July 2009 9 Comments

I am in denial. Apparently, Joe didn’t read my heart-warming letter. One year is one thing, but signing this guy for five years? Plan on five more seasons just like the last one (or until the Pistons can unload that massive contract).

From Yahoo! Sports:

The Detroit Pistons have reached agreement with free-agent guard Ben Gordon(notes) on a five-year contract worth around $55 million, a source with knowledge of the talks told Yahoo! Sports Wednesday evening.

The Pistons are continuing to negotiate with forward Charlie Villanueva(notes).

July 8 is the first day free agents can sign contracts.

Gordon and Villanueva, who played together for a year at UConn, traveled to Detroit on Wednesday morning to meet with Detroit president Joe Dumars.

I am such an overated player. I can’t belive old man Dumars signed me to such a riduculous contract, and for five years too! Hahaha! What a great way to eat up all your cap space – signing me, the second coming of Allen Iverson! I can’t wait to hoist up shot after shot! Defense? We talkin’ about defense? Defense? Man, we talkin’ about defense?

Yeah just another small shooting guard except he can shoot bettr and that’s about it and he’s not washed up like a.i I’m not a big fan of what dumars is doing this offseason he needs just too wait and have a crappy year this year and sign one of those big names coming out free agency next year. the free agents he is trying to sign are not going to flow well together what the pistons have now. This is not how u rebuild a team at all

haha! wait till next year….you know how many teams are saving money for next year to get the likes of King James, Bosh, Wade? you guys are nuts. half the league will be gunning for those names, and bet detroit won’t be at the top of thier list. Gordon is a good pick up, sure he takes some bad shots, then again, most scorers do….show me a better pick up that detroit actually has a realistic shot of getting. lets not forget, Dumars built the championship team of 04 from no names and journeymen, and what many thought to be mediocre players, so don’t be so quick to dismiss his credibility.

You make good points, but they paid him way too much, and for way too long. This isn’t about waiting for 2010, it’s about signing a quality player. Ben Gordon is far too streaky to dish that kind of $$ to.

Plus, they don’t have Larry Brown anymore.

I can dig that….Gordon is streaky, a little consistency goes a long way, perhaps a starting role would help him become more consistent (if he starts), but even streaky players can be contributors. besides outside of rip and chauncy they last few years, the pistons starting five have been somewhat streaky. sheed,25 points 10 rebounds, 3 blocks one night, 8 points, 5 rebounds, no blocks the next, they were all prone to dissappear at times. and perhaps dumars did overpay him a smidge, but Joe has built a reputation on taking chances, and it’s worked out so far….kinda.

I think he has the potential to do well. I just can’t grasp how a “me-first” player who doesn’t play defense can help this team in the long run.

well thats what coaches are for. defense can be coached….somewhat, and a little selfishness might help the pistons, thier lack of a superstar, or selfish player has made them get stagnent in recent years, they were all too willing to rely on each other to do it in crunch time, no one wanted to take over and just win the game….in my humble opinion.
