Why Boston’s Offer Should Have Been Accepted

23 June 2009 6 Comments

If you haven’t heard about it, you would have soon:

“The Celtics offered Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo to the Detroit Pistons for a package that included Richard Hamilton,Tayshaun Prince and Rodney Stuckey, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.”

Mind you, the trade was rejected.

First of all, this is from a reliable writer and I believe it really did go down. This isn’t the usual summer rumor mill garbage.

Second, I’ve seen a lot of negative reaction from Pistons fans and to be honest, it’s puzzling.

Sure, if this trade was offered to you in NBA Live, it should be promptly rejected. However, this is the NBA. There are pocketbooks and salaries. The Pistons need to clear cap space.

Some key points:

  • Rip is locked up until 2012 at over $11 million a year and he’s declining. He recovered nicely mid-season, but we all know he will never be the same without Chauncey Billups at his side. It’s time for Dumars to reverse the mistake of extending his contract that long.
  • Tayshaun is almost 30 and let’s face it, he’s not very reliable. His glory days of successfully putting a body on Kobe or LeBron are behind him.
  • I love Rodney Stuckey, but he is not The Messiah. Dumars blocked any offers in the 2008 offseason with the famous “sacred cow” bit. We gave him a year to show his stuff; he had some nice 30+ point games, but it was on-and-off all season, in true Piston fashion. Yes, he will improve, but how optimistic can we realistically be?
  • Ray Allen is old, but he has an expiring contract. He’s off the books next summer, the “summer of love.”
  • Rajon Rondo is overrated due to his surrounding cast. Regardless, he can penetrate better than Stuckey and has some ridiculous jets. I’ve heard that he’s a nuisance in the locker room, but we’ve dealt with Rasheed Wallace, how much harder can it be? Isn’t that what we hired Michael Curry for anyway?

I will concur that, in lieu of the apparent fan outrage, possibly one more decent body be thrown in from the Celtics’ side. I don’t think Leon Powe would have been too outrageous. But changes need to happen. How are the ever going to occur if our front office shoots legit offers down every time they surface?

I don’t see how you could call yourself a fan and say that that deal should have been done. RIP may be getting up there in age but his game will “age” nicely, ala Reggie Miller. He will be putting up solid numbers all the way until the end of his contract. Tayshaun Prince may not be the star we all wanted him to be but he still plays better defense than MOST and we know what we’re going to get from him – at least 14 points and 5 rebounds a game. Plus, the dude is durable as heck! He has only missed 3 games since his rookie year – that’s 3 games in 6 years! As for Stuck, we are not asking him to be the Messiah, we just want him to be Rodney Stuckey. We want him to continue to improve and become a more all-around player. Point guard is the hardest position to transition to from college, and I think Stuckey made great strides last year in the midst of turmoil. You have to remember it was his first full season, and he was handed the starting job to a veteran team. Stuckey will be fine, I bet he will even have a better career than Rondo.

Rondo is a good player, maybe even a little better than Stuckey at this point in his career, but he also has 1 1/2 more years experience. Plus, he isn’t exactly the nicest guy to be around in the locker room from what I hear, and the point guard has to be a likeable guy if he wants his teammates to rally around him. Ray Allen has had a hall of fame career but the dude is 34! His days of taking a game over are dwindling fast. Games that used to be a nightly occurrence are now only once a week – if that. I don’t care that his contract comes off the books next year, I would rather play with this year’s free agent crop because there are far less hands dabbling. Everybody is trying to generate cap space for next year, so why would we? Why would we want to do what everyone else is doing when we can do our own thing one year earlier? This year ALL the free agents are calling us because we have money, next year ALl the teams will be calling free agents because all the TEAMS have money to spend. See what I’m saying? Think of it as “one step ahead”.

Just because a trade involves big names doesn’t mean it is a “legit” trade. This is a year for change and I guarantee it will happen, it will just happen smartly.

    KRONIKjose,

I disagree. Like I said, this isn’t an “NBA Live” trade. If we were talking about a straight talent trade, it would never work.

The truth is that Rip is overbooked. He’s solid now but how badly will we want him by 2012? His stock has already fallen via his sub-par ‘08-’09 performance. If we’re clearing over $33 million in cap room and getting an expiring player like Ray Allen in return, it’s hard to go wrong. He’s old, but I’m sure he can last another year.

The Pistons need to prepare for 2010. Just because all of the teams will be going after the same players doesn’t mean you can just give up on potentially landing hall-of-famers. Would you rather see the Pistons win a ring with Bosh or Wade in a couple years or sacrifice it all so we can pick up Boozer this summer and be mediocre for the next half-decade?

Yes indeed this offer was a joke. Rondo is nothing with the big three
Stuckey is bigger and has more potential.

Why would we want Rondo? Why not just trade our whole team.
Why did Boston offer this deal?

Rondo played the entire 2009 playoffs without KG and much of it without Ray Allen, yet he still managed to put up career numbers.

Here’s one example where Rajon notched a triple-double. KG wasn’t playing and Pierce had one field goal, but Rondo had 18 assists:

I always hear that Rajon Rondo is nothing without the Big Three, but I never see any facts to back it up. Yes, he is better when they’re healthy…but who wouldn’t be?
